In 1860 the artist Moritz von Schwindt (1804-1871) wrote to one of his pupils that “…what seizes the soul and touches it, shows the true calling. What stirs you deeply is your calling, your profession: Deus in nobis…”

Thus, Burgy Zapp could hardly wait till he had successfully completed his studies of Social Behavioural Sciences, Philosophy and Statistics in fall 2008, to follow his calling. His first solo exhibition of 104 “camera tableaus” in December of the same year rewarded his patience with a furious success: he sold 108 pictures!

His creative work originated in charcoal works depicting facial expressions, mostly the darker side of human emotions – using cubism as a means of artistic conveyance. From early on he complemented this facet of his work with impressionist photography of landscapes as well as people. However, he exclusively uses manual filters, exposure settings and reversion to negatives to show the viewer what caught his eye and how he perceived. He never digitally edits his pictures, as he holds the conviction that the concept of impressionism itself forbids this as a contradictio per se.

He agrees with the painter Alfred Sisley (1839 – 1899) “that the observer should, by means of elimination of unnecessary details, be led … to first and foremost perceive what so deeply moved the artist himself. …The artist´s emotional reaction is what inspires the work of art with a life of its own and thus inspires the emotional reaction in the observer.”

When – depending on the perceived scene – an increasing number of his impressionist pictures eliminated details to such an extent that they could only be called abstract, he eventually accepted this as a new style of his oeuvre and now rejoices in using what renders best his inner vision.

Lately, Burgy Zapp has carried this further to comprise expression of intellectual concepts. Thus, his web site presents the work-styles “Contemporary Impressionism”, “Abstract Photography”, “Intelligencia / Conceptual Art” and “angst emanation” in 6 so-called selection catalogues for online-browsing as well as the catalogue of his dazzling success “Exhibition No.1”!

Burgy Zapp hat Soziale Verhaltenswissenschaften, mit Schwerpunkt Arbeits- und Organisationspsychologie sowie Philosophie und Statistik studiert.
